Before branching out on her own, Marina Cortbawi handled sales at Oscar de la Renta and Carolina Herrera—both jobs that required tons of travel—so it makes sense that her pieces are travel-inspired. In fact, she named her brand for the merlette—a fictional bird from French heraldry that’s constantly flying because it has no feet. Cortbawi is partial to the kinds of gauzy fabrics and voluminous sleeves that are staples in the vacation suitcase, but she keeps colors and patterns so simple that everything works at home with jeans and heels long after the tan fades.
